The Issues

Preserving Livable Neighborhoods: Carroll Gardens/Columbia Waterfront

Carroll Gardens needs to be protected from out-of-scale development springing up on its streets. The neighborhood is still covered by 1961 "towers-on-the-park" zoning, so it does not have height limits like neighboring Cobble Hill or Park Slope. As a result, developers have been building in ways that undermine the neighborhood's historic character. The answer is a contextual rezoning of the neighborhood to provide comprehensive height and bulk limits. Brad is pleased that City Planning has agreed to move forward with this rezoning effort, and urges them to make this a reality as soon as possible. Brad Lander supports the Carroll Gardens/Columbia Street Contextual rezonings with some modifications. Brad also supports expanding the Carroll Gardens Historic District.

For the Columbia Street Waterfront, Brad supports the efforts of the Columbia Waterfront Neighborhood Association to rezone the area between the BQE and the piers to M1/R6B, which would allow for a mix of residential and manufacturing uses, with height restrictions to prevent out-of-scale development, and performance standards to allow a healthy mixed-use area.

Save our Buses and Subways

Drastic cuts proposed by the MTA would decimate public transportation services in our community. The MTA is proposing to reduce service or completely eliminate the B23, B51, B69, B67, B71, B75, and B77 buses all of which directly serve our district; phase-out the student MetroCards, which get 600,000 kids to school; and reduce paratransit (Access-A-Ride) service by $40 million. There are several things that we can do to make our voices heard on this issue.

Honor Julian Brennan by Helping Build Schools in Afghanistan

Marine Lance Corporal Julian Brennan, who grew up on 15th Street in Park Slope, was 25 when he was killed in Afghanistan one year ago, on January 24, 2009. In a remarkable act of compassion, his parents Bill and Thya Brennan are asking us to make contributions to the Central Asia Institute, which builds schools in Afghanistan.
